Public CCTV and surveillance cameras on official city lists

5,987 public CCTV cameras on 20 official lists.

Checked

5,987 public-space cameras appear on 20 official city, council and police lists in the US, UK and 8 other countries, checked October 28, 2026. Amsterdam's areas, Darwin's sites and Taoyuan's sites count apart, in their own units. Cities without a published list are not shown. No pictures or streams.

Road cameras with pictures are on traffic cameras; plate readers are on license plate readers.

Official camera lists by city

Each row is the publisher's own list, with its licence. Only camera rows add to the count of 5,987; a list of sites or areas counts in its own unit.

Who runs public cameras

The lists come from city councils, police departments and city IT offices; each row's publisher says which. A list shows the cameras its publisher chose to publish.

What cameras police use

5 of these lists hold police cameras: Baltimore, MD (861 cameras), Washington, DC (519 cameras), Seattle, WA (85 cameras), Lisbon (Bairro Alto) (25 cameras) and Taoyuan (4,837 sites).

Mobile cameras move between places: Washington, DC's list has 10 mobile cameras without a position, so they are not on this page.

County Durham's list leaves out 22 body-worn, mobile or redeployable cameras and 532 indoor cameras.

Plate readers are a separate kind of camera, on license plate readers.

How many CCTV cameras are in London and the UK

This page counts only cameras on published lists: 2,080 cameras on 8 UK council lists, none of them in a London borough. A national figure that circulates is an estimate, not a list. UK road cameras are on the UK speed camera map.

The largest lists published

No official ranking of cities exists. These are the largest lists on this page, in their own units:

  • Taoyuan4,837 sites, Taoyuan City Police Department
  • Kakogawa1,562 cameras, Kakogawa City (Hyogo)
  • Baltimore, MD861 cameras, Baltimore City OIT / Public Safety and Emergency Services, CitiWatch
  • County Durham719 cameras, Durham County Council (via Data Mill North)
  • Washington, DC519 cameras, DC Metropolitan Police Department / DC GIS (OCTO)

Rules for cameras in public places

A public records request asks an agency for its camera locations. The rules for plate readers by state are on plate reader laws, and for face recognition on facial recognition laws by state.

What this page does not show

  • Private cameras, and cameras a list leaves out.
  • Road cameras with pictures: traffic cameras.
  • Webcams and home cameras.
  • Cities with no published list.
  • Any picture or stream.

Questions about public cameras

Where are the public cameras in my city?

Type your city or country in the list search. If your city has no row, it has no published list here; a public records request asks the agency directly.

Who runs public CCTV cameras?

The lists here come from city councils, police departments and city IT offices. Each row names its publisher.

How many CCTV cameras are in the UK?

This page counts only cameras on published lists: 2,080 cameras on 8 UK council lists, none of them in a London borough. A circulating national figure is an estimate, not a list.

Which city has the most surveillance cameras?

No official ranking exists. The largest lists published here: Taoyuan (4,837 sites), Kakogawa (1,562 cameras), Baltimore, MD (861 cameras), County Durham (719 cameras) and Washington, DC (519 cameras).

Can I watch these cameras?

No. This page shows no pictures or streams. Road cameras with pictures are on traffic cameras.

Are plate readers on this page?

No. Plate readers are on license plate readers.

Why is a city missing?

It has no published list, its list states no reuse licence, or its data site asks automated readers not to fetch the file. A list joins this page once it can be read and reused.
