How a cashless toll gantry works

A gantry is a frame over the road. Cars pass under it at speed, with no booth and no barrier.

An antenna on the frame reads the toll tag on the windshield, such as E-ZPass or SunPass, and the agency charges that account.

Cameras on the frame photograph the plate. When no tag answers, the agency bills the registered owner by plate.

A toll plaza with booths takes cash or a tag instead; this page counts gantries only. See license plate readers and what each kind of camera looks like.
