How to read the table
- Programs run
- At least one city, county or state agency runs red light cameras and issues tickets.
- Allowed by state law
- A state law allows red light cameras. The row gives the rules a ticket would follow.
- Programs ended
- Red light camera programs ran here and have stopped.
- Banned by state law
- The row links the state law that bars them and quotes it. Where a city's older contract still runs, as in Texas, the row gives that city's rules.
- No state law found
- No state law on red light cameras was found, and no program was found running.
Some rows say "From a secondary source." Their facts could not be checked against the law's own text or the agency's own page. They come from another source, such as a copy of the law on another site or a news report.
"As of" gives the date of the law's text, or of the latest change the row reflects, such as a bill that failed.
How CamsAhead counts cameras explains how the site uses its sources.
What a red light camera notice is
A red light camera notice comes by mail. In 19 states and DC, it goes to the registered owner of the car. In 9 states, the owner can name the driver instead, and in Arizona the notice goes to the driver.
It lists what you owe and the deadline. It also says how to pay or contest. In California, the owner or the named driver can see the photos (California Vehicle Code §21455.5(g) and §21455.9(g)(5)).
In 16 states, the law sets a deadline for sending the notice, and the row gives it. Some states call it a notice of violation; others call it a citation or a summons. The "Civil or criminal" column gives the law's own word for the case.
How to pay or look up a ticket
Your notice names the agency that sent it, and that agency's page is the one to use. Each row with a program also links one payment page in that state, run by a city, a court or a state agency.
Do you have to pay? The notice says what happens next, and the row adds what its law or agency names. In 9 states and DC, an unpaid notice draws late fees. In Maryland and Washington, it can lead to a registration hold, and in Florida it becomes a court citation.
How to contest a red light camera ticket
Each state sets its own steps, and your notice gives the exact ones and the deadline.
- Check the deadline. It is on the notice, not in this table. Answer before it passes.
- Ask for the evidence. Request the photos or video and the record of the case.
- Name the driver, if your state allows it. In 9 states, the registered owner can say who was driving, and the row says whether yours does.
- Request a hearing. A hearing officer decides the case in 7 states and DC, and a court does in 14 states. The row links where to start.
- Keep copies. Save what you send, and note the day you sent it.
Points, your record and insurance
In 14 states and DC, a red light camera ticket adds no license points. In Arizona and California, it can, and the row says when.
In 11 states, the law keeps it off your driving record. In Arizona, California and Oregon, it can go on the record.
In 8 states, the law bars insurers from using it. In the others, the law does not say.
Questions about red light camera tickets
How much is a red light camera ticket?
It depends on the state. Where states issue them, fines run from $50 to $486, and your state's row gives its fine and the law that sets it.
What happens if you run a red light with a camera?
If the camera records the car, a notice may come by mail. In 19 states and DC, it goes to the registered owner. It gives the deadline to pay or contest, and your state's row shows how to contest.
Do red light camera tickets go on your record?
In 11 states, the law keeps them off your driving record. In Arizona, California and Oregon, a ticket can go on it. Check your state's row.
Do you have to pay a red light camera ticket?
It depends on your state and the notice. Each row says what its law or agency names for an unpaid notice, such as late fees, a registration hold or a court citation. To dispute it, contest it before the deadline.
How many points is a red light camera ticket?
In 14 states and DC, none. In Arizona and California, a ticket can add points, and the row says when.
How do I check if I got a red light camera ticket?
The notice comes by mail and names the agency that sent it. Each row with a program also links one payment page in that state, run by a city, a court or a state agency.
Can you get a red light camera ticket for turning right on red?
California law allows a right turn on a steady red circle after stopping. A sign can say no (California Vehicle Code §21453(b) and (c)). Each agency sets how it checks right turns (California Vehicle Code §21455.5(c)(1)). In Washington, DC, a right turn on red without a full stop has its own fine. See its row.
