California red light camera questions

Are red light cameras legal in California?

Yes. California law lets cities run red light cameras with signs at each camera intersection. Each city decides whether to use them.

Which California cities have red light cameras?

20 programs have a program page. 14 more programs listed, not yet verified. The table on this page names them. Culver City's is the only current city list shown here. Intersections from public records in 6 more programs are on the map, marked unverified.

How do I contest a red light camera ticket in California?

Follow the steps and the deadline on the notice. The car's owner, or the driver the owner names, can see the photos of the case (California Vehicle Code §21455.5(g) and §21455.9(g)(5)).

Can you turn right on red at a red light camera in California?

California law allows a right turn on a steady red circle after stopping, unless a sign says no (California Vehicle Code §21453(b) and (c)). A red arrow means no turn that way. Drivers must also yield to people walking and to nearby traffic.

How long are red light camera photos kept in California?

California has two red light camera laws. The older one lets records be kept for up to six months, or until the case closes if later (California Vehicle Code §21455.5(f)(3)). The newer one allows up to 60 days after the case closes (California Vehicle Code §21455.9(g)(4)).
