How speed camera tickets work

Each state sets its own camera rules: who may run cameras, the fine, and whether a ticket adds license points. In California, under AB 645, a city's first 60 days of enforcement send warnings only. So do the first 60 days on each street it adds later. Then a notice can carry a civil fine with no points. Los Angeles fines and how to respond.

Speed cameras: questions

Where are speed cameras in the United States?

Speed camera programs are confirmed in 28 states and DC, 332 in all. This page lists 199 locations from 5 California city lists, 194 of them on the map. Each state page lists its programs.

Are speed cameras legal?

It depends on the state. 28 states and DC have speed camera programs. 8 states ban them by state law, Idaho among them, and in 10 more no state law allows them. Find your state in the table above.

Do speed cameras show up on this map before they issue tickets?

Yes. Cameras appear when the city lists them, with their status: approved, under construction, warning period or issuing tickets.

What speed does CamsAhead show for each camera?

The posted limit, and only the posted limit. The posted limit is the law. When a camera ticket starts is legal information, in each program's tickets section.

Are there speed cameras on highways?

Some states use speed cameras in highway work zones, and each state page lists its programs. In California, state law keeps them off state routes. The one exception is Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, which has its own law.

What is photo radar?

Photo radar is another name for a speed camera. It checks a car's speed against the posted limit at one spot. The owner of a car over the limit can get a ticket by mail.

Are you against speed cameras?

The data says speed cameras cut crashes. Many people still find them annoying. CamsAhead shows where they are, the posted limit and the next date.
