How red light cameras work

The camera watches the stop line at a set of traffic lights. When the light is red, it records a car that crosses the line.

In England and Wales, government guidance says where they go. It puts them at traffic lights where drivers have caused crashes by going through a red light.

The same guidance asks for speed cameras to be yellow and easy to see from a distance. Those rules do not cover red light cameras, because the red light itself tells drivers to stop.
