Chain controls and road conditions

Caltrans posts chain controls, closures and CHP incidents on QuickMap, on its Highway 50 conditions page and on its SR 89 conditions page. Drive the posted limit.

In winter, Caltrans lists the chain control rules and the signs that start them on its chain controls page.

Highway 50 past the state line, SR 207 (Kingsbury Grade) and SR 431 (Mt Rose) are in Nevada: NDOT posts their cameras on nvroads.com.

Lake Tahoe camera questions

Is chain control on for Highway 50 at Echo Summit?

Caltrans posts chain controls for Highway 50 on its highway conditions page and on QuickMap. The cameras here show the road at each spot.

Where is the Echo Summit camera?

In the Highway 50 list above, eastbound, postmile 66.84. Caltrans tags each camera with a nearby town, not the summit's name.

Which cameras cover Meyers, Twin Bridges and South Lake Tahoe?

Caltrans tags 1 near Meyers, 2 near Twin Bridges and 5 near South Lake Tahoe, the Ski Run area included. They are in the Highway 50 list above, by direction.

Are these the Lake Tahoe webcams?

No. These are Caltrans road cameras. Lake and resort webcams are run by resorts and visitor bureaus and are not listed here.

Where are the I-80 and Donner Summit cameras?

On the Donner Pass (I-80) cameras page: 16 cameras over the summit, in road order.

Are there cameras on the Nevada side?

Yes, run by NDOT and posted on nvroads.com. CamsAhead lists the cameras Caltrans lists.

Is there a way to see traffic camera footage?

Not past footage. Caltrans says: “Caltrans traffic camera video footage and still images are neither retained nor archived.” Each camera on this page links to its image on the Caltrans site.

Can I get a speeding ticket from a traffic camera?

No. These Caltrans cameras show the road. They are not speed or red light cameras, and they issue no tickets. Speed cameras have their own pages, such as California speed cameras.

Is there an app that tells you where traffic cameras are?

Yes. The CamsAhead app puts these traffic cameras on a map, with speed, red light and plate reader cameras.

How do I view traffic cameras on Google Maps?

Google Maps does not show Caltrans camera images. Caltrans QuickMap does, and so does this page: each row links to the camera's picture on Caltrans.
